If you’re not dealing with -25C or -13F - don’t talk about the cold. If you aren’t even from a place that gets there - you don’t know about the cold.

Everyone has the right to complain, but I have a very hard time tolerating any bellyaching about Winnipeg’s cold weather, especially from folks that have lived in this city for most of their lives. It’s like, you know what’s coming, man, so your pissing and moaning won’t change it.

Basically, you’ve gotta embrace the situation, or shrivel. I tell that to anyone that’s unfamiliar with the climate. Either go outside and try to love it, or stay home and stay warm. We live in an age where boredom isn’t an option, so there’s plenty for you to do and/or see. You’ll get by.

Now, with all that said, I have to say that until this past week, the weather around here has had me down a little. Why is that? Well, those of you not from here probably haven’t heard that we’ve been experiencing warmer than average temperatures. Record-breaking ones, in fact. It’s been spring-like. It’s been the polar opposite of what we usually deal with. That’s fucking scary. So I don’t have to tell you (but I will anyway) that this has been yet another reminder that global warming is very real. That’s why I’ve been bummed. However, I’ll continue to do my part in conserving energy, recycling, composting, etc. Anything to try and stem the tide. Maybe you’ll follow suit? That’d be nice.

On the 11th – my birthday, how appropriate – we got a healthy dumping of snow. With this, and the amount that just fell as I typed this screed, things are beginning to feel normal again. I’d like this to continue, of course.
